Janet Millward

Tutor - Pottery

My love for pottery started when I was 13 and I was fortunate to be able to ‘pot’ for my last 5 years at school. I then went to university to study medicine, so I had to take a break. However, as soon as I was qualified, I started evening classes and honed my skills on the wheel using both electric and kick wheels. I then took another break when I had children but as soon as my youngest started school, I joined Avoncroft, initially attending Jane McMillan’s class for 15 years!

Five years ago, my son built me a workshop in my garden, so I am now able to ‘pot’ at home. My great love is working on the wheel, though I also keep my hand-in-hand building. I mostly make functional ware, teapots and jugs being my favourites. I have an informal approach to my classes.

After making sure members have the basic techniques of pinch pots, slab building, and coiling, I like them to come up with ideas of what they want to make, and I will help them achieve them.

Of course, my first love is working on the wheel, and my face lights up when someone wants to try throwing. I have been teaching for five years, and I love the creativity of my classes and the inspiration I get from the members.
