Richard Crabtree

Tutor - Painting

My artistic style is a unique blend of influences, primarily drawn from my deep appreciation for wildlife and nature. I find inspiration in the works of Basil Ede, Archibald Thorburn, David Shepherd, Rien Poortvliet, Rembrandt, Constable and John Singer Sergent. While I am proficient in various mediums, I have a particular fondness for traditional oil and watercolour. My paintings are a fusion of realism, life, and atmosphere, reflecting my personal interpretation of the natural world.

Alongside my painting practices and exhibition work, I developed a love of teaching. Having completed a teacher training course, I offered classes at Worcester and Bromsgrove Colleges before moving to Avoncroft Art Society in 2011. My classes offer a continuous study of art and painting and are based mainly on watercolour techniques. However, they also include drawing, charcoal, acrylic oil, pastel, and many other aspects of art.

My commitment to the art community is reflected in my membership in several prestigious societies. I am an elected member of the Birmingham Watercolour Society, The SAA, Art Profile, and various other societies. These memberships not only provide me with opportunities for growth and learning but also allow me to contribute to the vibrant art scene.

Teaching Focus

My approach to teaching is to enable all students to achieve their enjoyment and goals, applying a collective approach while still considering their preference of subject, style, and medium. New topics are regularly introduced after with a comprehensive demonstration of techniques, colour mixes, professional tips and tricks, after which the members work on their own interpretation under individual tuition.
